Stream Below Kaaterskill Falls in the Catskills

Part of the Landscape Collection

Rip Van Winkle, a short story from the book, The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., by Washington Irving is a strange little tale. Stranger still is the tale of Palenville, New York, the gateway to the Rip Van Winkle trail. Irving admitted he'd never set foot in the Catskills when he wrote his tale, and yet the area early on took possession of the tale. During Washington Irving's lifetime we was often asked if Palenville was indeed Rip's home, something he'd never deny nor confirm.

Perhaps it's the people of Palenville wanting to believe it, so hard that it finally stuck. Enough to get a stretch of Route 25A named after the famous tale, giving state approval to the idea.

Since there is no definitive answer of where Rip Van WInkle took his long nap, one place in the Catskills is as good as another. Besides, you just kind of feel when it's right.

The track up Kaaterskill Falls is one site frequently named as the route Rip took that fateful day, and it's a beautiful and appropriate choice. Pick a fall weekday just after the websites say the leaves have peaked, ideally a misty one, and get there early. You might get the place to yourself. Fine art print of the stream from Kaaterskill Falls, moss covered boulders, fall colors - it would look great on your wall.
