Tropical Storm Hanna Rolls In

Hurricane Hanna was the deadliest hurricane of the 2008 season, but by the time it hit Long Island it had been downgraded to a tropical storm.

Like any good midwesterner, I took the opportunity to head to Fire Island National Seashore about the time the storm was to strike. The storm's approach was masked by a heavy fog which did little to disguise the strong surf rolling in.

As it was expected to regain hurricane strength when it hit shore, I set off just as the fog started rolling ashore, managing to stay just ahead of it all the way home. Luckily for Long Island, Hanna fizzled out.

But I did manage to get a few shots, sitting on the beech with my heels dug into the sand, trying not to get pulled out to sea. This image is by far my most popular image, continually popping up on one blog or another.
